Learning is fun at the museum – Palaeontology for school classes
GONDWANA – Das Praehistorium has huge appeal, offering opportunities for multisensory out-of-school learning and presenting fascinating, scientifically based facts on the history of the earth and human evolution that complement the curriculum.
Our specials for schools
We offer interactive tours for children and pupils which supplement the curriculum and turn learning into a special event.
Just send us your enquiry and we will find the right tour guide for you.
Practical research with the microscope
This special involves practical research using the microscope. Children can discover the universe that lies beneath their feet – the tiniest organisms on our planet, such as microscopic creatures, plants and fossils.
On request, the group can also set out on their own little expedition and then examine fossils they find themselves or water samples from the Reden Water Garden under the microscope. Participants find it particularly intriguing to examine something that they have discovered themselves.
- Participants: up to 20
- Duration: 1 hour
- Price: €30.00
- Professional support from an employee
The Paleo-Lab
If you’ve always wanted to know how palaeontolotists and preparators work, our “Palaeo Lab”, located in the passage between the Praehistorium and the time travel portal, can put you in the picture.
On request, live preparations can be performed in this exhibition space. This will give you the chance to observe researchers at work, ask questions and do some palaeontological research of your own.
The practicalities of palaeontological collecting and the preparation of fossils will be demonstrated in the lab.
A collection of genuine fossils reveals just how tricky it can be to recognise certain fossilised remains. You’ll get some tips and ideas from a specialist to help you discover all the interesting things you can find outside your own front door, and then you can get down to preparing the fossils you’ve found.
- Participants: up to 20
- Duration: 1 hour
- Price: €30.00

Collecting and discovering fossils
There is no better way to learn than to collect and discover fossils for yourself. GONDWANA – Das Praehistorium is the perfect place for this, being located on the site of a former coal mine. The remains of plants and even a few animals from the Carboniferous period, the coal age, remain within the rock today, some 300 million years on.
It’s the perfect environment for young researchers, who can round off their visit to GONDWANA – Das Praehistorium by collecting fossils from the coal forest all by themselves or with professional guidance. Leaves, trunks, branches, driftwood from former rivers and the fossilised forest floor, with its dense network of roots, are all within easy reach and there is ample space for research and discovery.
- Participants: up to 20
- Duration: 1 hour
- Price: €30.00
